I was not into politics when I was younger. I remember my grandmother discussing politics a little. I remember she voted for Jimmy Carter the first time and she voted for a Republican president when Ronald Reagan ran in 1980. I never voted for Ronald Reagan. I never had the chance as I did not turn 18 until 1985. I have voted for a Republican for president since I turned 18. George H.W. Bush in 1988 and 1992. Bob Dole in 1996. George W. Bush in 2000 and 2004.
I first met Dale Preuss while I was stationed in Okinawa, Japan. His conversation quickly turned to politics and how we as citizens needed to be more involved. He was always passionate about Reagan and the politics of hope. How America is still a bright light on a hill. I came to have a deeper appreciation for my country and how politics have shaped our past.
I have never asked others to use me a rod to gauge how a Christian should act, but I proudly proclaim myself a follower of Jesus Christ. I try very hard to follow his example and live a Christian lifestyle. To this end, when it comes to politics, I consider myself a conservative and a Republican. I do not agree with everything the Republican party does but I agree with them most of the time.
I know that some are trying to distance themselves from George W. Bush. I still proudly say that I voted for him twice and would vote for him again. Regardless of how you feel about the war in Iraq and why it began, the end result is that Iraq is now a free country. Much like France coming to our aid in 1776, America has helped a new country get a start down the road of democracy. I stand behind our decision to remain in Iraq until we help them on their feet.
Here is a short video on Reagan, Bush (41) and Bush (43). It is a visual reminder on why I also call myself a Republican.
